Robert was a brilliant, famous mathematician; but for years he had to be cared for by his daughter, Catherine, as his mind slowly began to fail him. After his death, Catherine struggles to keep her own emotions in check – only exacerbated by the arrival of her estranged sister Claire, and Hal, an ex-student of her father’s. Hal comes ready to work; eager to examine Robert’s 103 notebooks in search of valuable material, but one discovery in particular brings to light Catherine’s biggest fear: How much of her father’s genius (and madness) will she inherit?
Proof is a play about family, legacy and trust; it’s about letting go of certainty and allowing people in to help you because you can’t always be successful on your own.
