A fresh, queer reimagining of the classic novel, Emma by Jane Austen. Our Emma isn’t a traditional period drama: the characters are not the elite and find the socialising expected of them hard; the comedy is high; the sound design and stagecraft are woven into the fabric of the piece. This adaptation focuses on Emma’s social anxiety and how this informs and is informed by her relationship with the local community. We are also using the character of Harriet to explore lesbian identity in the regency period and the impact of compulsory heterosexuality and the straight structures around us on growing up. Most importantly, it is a piece about all of the different ways that we find and show our love for each other.
Thalia Arts are a company dedicated to queering traditional tropes within the fabric of the production and making process, as well as exploring themes of sexuality explicitly. We bring together queer creatives to create comedic and heart-warming theatre centring LGBTQIA+ people and their day-to-day experiences.
